David R. Martin, 89, of Stevens, passed away peacefully at his home in Stevens on August 3, 2026. Born on January 16, 1937, in Clay Township, he was the son of the late Jonas & Emma (Rutt) Martin, and the loving husband of Betty Jane (Wise) Martin.

A man of quiet strength and remarkable skill, David dedicated over three decades to Rutt’s Furniture in Hinkletown, where his talent for repairing almost anything earned him the fond nickname “the Furniture Doc.” After Rutt’s closed, he continued sharing his expertise at Leid’s Upholstery and later at Stumps Upholstery in Leola. Through his long and committed career, David gained the respect and trust of colleagues and customers alike, known for his meticulous workmanship and steadfast reliability. Music played an important role in David’s life, particularly bluegrass. An accomplished banjo player, he performed in a band during his younger years, creating not just moments of joy but also three cherished records that captured his love for the art. His passion for trains led him to build an impressive model train setup in the basement, reflecting the detail, patience, and care that defined much of his life. A man of faith, David was a member of the United Church of Christ and regularly attended several local churches over the years. He found solace and purpose in caring for his three-acre homestead, tending to his garden, mowing the grounds, and more recently, cultivating a raspberry patch. His connection to the outdoors reflected his appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. David’s home was a welcoming place for family and friends, especially during the annual Wise family reunion. Each year, he constructed a pavilion and canopy for the gathering, making sure everyone felt comfortable and cherished. Mealtimes were a source of happiness for David, as he often expressed how much he loved his wife’s cooking. Despite his many talents and passions, David was by nature an introvert. He preferred the comfort and tranquility of home, where he could be found relaxing after a day’s work or enthusiastically following Phillies baseball games. David’s life was a testament to quiet dedication, family devotion, and the joy found in simple things. His gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

Along with his wife, Betty, David is survived by five sons, Bruce Martin of Adamstown, Barry Martin (Paula) of Ephrata, Robert Martin of Denver, David Martin (Janet) of Copenhagen, NY, Douglas Martin (Nuria) of Newnan; a daughter, Beverly Lash (Warren) of Galen Hall; 10 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Along with his parents, David is predeceased by all of his brothers and sisters.

A viewing will be held on Friday, August 7th, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., immediately followed by funeral services at 10:00 a.m., both to be held at the Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, Inc., located at 34-38 N. Reamstown Road, Reamstown, PA 17567. David’s final resting place will be at Center Union Church Cemetery.
