It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Bhanoo (Ben) Singh. He was a treasured son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

Born in Triumph Village, Guyana, to Balram and Rajnee Singh, Ben spent his childhood enjoying the simple beauty of nature and being surrounded by his siblings, cousins and friends. He could often be found tending to his family’s vegetable garden, reaping sugar cane, playing cricket, and flying kites near the seawall. These foundational years instilled in him a lifelong passion for gardening and cooking that would help bring together generations in love and laughter.

Driven by a strong work ethic, Ben attended the Guyana Technical Institute in Georgetown, where he trained as a heavy-duty mechanic. In 1979, he met and married his “honey”, Vijay (Vidya). In 1980, they welcomed their son, Omesh Anand Singh, and shortly after made the courageous trek to Edmonton, Canada in pursuit of a bright future.

Their settlement was not easy, but every challenge brought the family closer. Amidst economic challenges, Ben remained resilient and sacrificed his specialized training and career aspiration to provide stability for his young family. In 1986, Ben and Vijay welcomed their daughter, Juliana Pratima Singh. Soon after, Ben secured a position with the City of Edmonton as a computer operator where he dedicated 35 exceptional years of service, marked by awards and recognition for his unwavering reliability, sharp mind, and tenacity.

In retirement, Ben found his truest calling as an Ajah and Nana. His four grandchildren – Vinesh Ramlall Singh, Roan Ezra Cuffley, Shaye Astrid Cuffley, and Karishma Nadelene Ramlall Singh, were the centre of his world and brought him the greatest joy and pride. He showered them with his time, love, and affection. This included spoiling them with his culinary specialities of French toast in the morning, fish stew in the afternoon, delectable crab curry in the evening, and freshly made salara as a nighttime snack.

Ben’s legacy is one of devotion, sacrifice, and unconditional love. In addition to his wife and children, Ben is lovingly remembered by his son-in-law, Kevin, and daughter-in-law, Vimla.

His passing leaves a permanent void for family across Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, United Kingdom and the United States of America. He will be tremendously missed by his surviving siblings and their families: Rita, Deopaul (Donna), Beena, Hitram (Donna), Janet (Linval), Jairam (Amrita), and sister-in-law Nalini. Ben was predeceased by his sister (Padmoutie), brother (Vikram), and brothers-in-law (Sydney and Harry).

A memorial service celebrating Ben’s life and honouring his legacy will be held in Edmonton. Information will be shared once confirmed.
