Orville
Gene “Dubbs” Haldeman, 73, of 475 Wabash Road, Ephrata,
Lancaster County, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at 4:20 PM in the
Essa Flory Hospice Center, East Hempfield Township, Lancaster
County, where he was a patient one day.
Born in Ephrata, he was a son of the late Howard P. and
Carrie E. (McCloud) Haldeman, and was the husband of Julia
Mary (Schreiber) Haldeman for 23 years on March 21st.
A 1949 graduate of Lititz High School, a graduate of
Mercersburg Academy, and attended Penn State University for 3
years.
He was a football and baseball enthusiast having played
in high school, at the academy and a guard position at Penn
State under coaches Rip Engle and Joe Paterno.
Haldeman also played baseball and football on teams in
Germany during his Army tenure.
He was a coach for the Lebanon “Rams” semi-pro
football team during the 1960’s.
“Dubbs” was the owner & operator of the
Brickerville Shire, Brickerville, Lancaster County, from
1959-61, the Warwick House, Lititz, Lancaster County, from
1961-68; ran the Royal Scotia Hotel, St. Croix, USVI, and the
Highlander Motel & Ski Lodge, Rutland, Vermont during the
1970’s.
He was last employed as the manager of the Crystal Tea
Room
Café of the former John Wanamaker’s downtown
Philadelphia location.
He was a corporal in the Army during World War II.
Surviving in addition to his wife are 3 daughters, Kim
Haldeman, Jeffersonville, PA; Dawn (Haldeman) Pitt, Lansdale,
PA; and Pam Haldeman, Lansdale, PA, and 2 grandchildren. |
